Kwarezimal for Lent, egg free with no added fat

These are my very favorite local sweets. They are traditionally eaten at Lent and are easy and quick to make with wonderful flavors.  This recipe completely egg free with no added fats.

Known as Kwarezimal, the word derives from quaresima for the 40 days of lent and the ingredients in it reflect repentance and giving up the luxuries of eggs and fat. I make mini Kwarezimal as I find them more practical and appealing in bite size.

You will need:

200 grams ground almonds
200 grams sifted plain flour
150 grams sugar OR icing sugar OR 3/4 cup stevia
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon Orange flower water
2 tablespoons grated citrus zest of a lemon,  orange and tangerine
1 vanilla pod
4 tablespoons honey
For topping:  warm honey and chopped Pistachios, almonds,walnuts or pecans to decorate and grated orange zest

Mix all the ingredients together and add just enough water to make a stiff dough. Knead lightly and shape into small bite size ovals. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 190 C for about 15-20 minutes, depending on the size.

While they are still hot, brush them with honey and sprinkle chopped nuts of your choice.

I use ground almonds, vanilla and cinnamon by Good Earth Distributors, honey by 3 leaves at J Calleja and flour by St Georges Brand.

  2. Hi Lea I like this traditional recipe. If I double it, would I still need equal amounts of almonds and flour or less amount of flour? Tls
